Competition
Browsing through the Nokia website today I came across the N76 multimedia computer (mobile phone). The mobile has standard Nokia toys – 2GB of music, web access, 2MGP camera, etc., and looks not unlike the Motorola RAZR. However, with this phone Nokia are running a competition to design the surface graphics. Just download the Photoshop® files and away you go.

Last summer we asked visitors to the annual V&A Village Fete to draw a picture of Queen Victoria in one minute without lifting their pen from the paper. We called it “Quick on the Draw” and 393 loyal subjects took part. Some of the drawings were reasonable likenesses, some were a little more expressive and some were… ahem. And the best bit? after a few months of scanning they are all now online for the first time here.

Only a couple of weeks left to enter Vormator, not a 50’s B-movie film but a book project by Delft group Booreiland and Groningen based Zeptonn. The challenge is to create artwork using only the supplied set of 8 shapes and following a strict rulebook. It’s a pretty tight brief although I think they have been generous with 8 shapes but hey, don’t argue with the Vormator.
The best submissions get published in the book (like a website only made of paper).

You may mistake the above for a collection of early nineties rave visuals, however these are infact the winners of the 2006 Small World Photomicrography Competition that showcase the beauty and complexity of life as seen through the light microscope.
The competition was open to the public; images that cut the final selection included; Wing scales of a Sunset Moth, a Fruit Fly larvae, Annelid Worms embryo, Mouse’s small Intestine and a Pupil of a freshwater Shrimp to name just a few. The top prize was awarded to Dr. Paul Appleton, for his stunning 2-Photon fluorescence image of a cell nuclei of a Mouse Colon. If you see yourself as a budding photomicrographer apply here for 2007. In the meantime, mum do you reckon I can have a microscope for Christmas?

The winner of the IKEA party tickets is Mr Brad Fancy. He thinks the party at Old Billingsgate should be called CRABSTIK and, so do we. Congratulations Brad!

IKEA are having a massive party at Old Billingsgate Market next Wednesday 30th August. Free drink and food (hope it’s not the meatballs) and surprises (it’s the meatballs) are promised. 30gms have a pair of tickets to give away to the funniest reply to this question:
If IKEA were having a massive party at Old Billingsgate Market, what would they name it?
Deadline 6pm on Friday 25th August, send your entries to the email link on the left.

Thanks again to everyone who entered Fibre’s “Quick on the Draw” competition at the V&A Village Fete last week. The challenge was to draw a picture of Queen Victoria in one minute without lifting the pen from the paper. Nearly 400 people took part, which gave the judges a right royal headache. Nevertheless they managed to reduce that to a shortlist of 35 from which they picked the winner… Mr Bingo! (Yes, we know he’s a professional illustrator, but all the judges were blindfolded to make the process completely unbiased.)
By the way, the original image of Queen Victoria is shown above on the right and Mr Bingo’s is on the left – uncanny isn’t it?
Here’s the shortlist of 35 (plus any of the other 359 entries that we’ve scanned to date) and more work from our winner Mr Bingo.

Nathan, Vikesh and Dave are still reeling from the V&A Village Fete this weekend. No, they didn’t overdo it on the fizzy pop and fruitcake – the Fibre stall was overwhelmed by hoards of people trying to draw Queen Victoria in one minute without lifting their pen from the paper. We expected only about 50 drawings but we have 394 to judge!, we’re also planning to put them online when we’ve found the time to scan them all. In the meantime, here’s a set of photos from our stall and here’s some from our stall neighbours Peepshow, who made defamatory portraits of celebrities with vegetables. Thanks to everyone who took part.

You have one minute and you can’t take your pen off the paper!
Scarlet Projects have once again asked Fibre to exhibit in this years V&A Village Fete at the Victoria & Albert Museum, a contemporary twist on the traditional English fete. This year Fibre’s stall will consist of a drawing competition where punters will have two minutes to draw Queen Victoria. The best-of-show (the decision of our eminent panel of judges ((us)) is final) will receive a “creative hamper” brimming to the top with crayons, pencils, paints and pens to enable your creative juices to flow.
Amongst the other 30 stalls this year you will be able to play Ping Pong with People Will Always Need Plates, do a farm dance with Rob Ryan, eat fish and chips with Alexandre Bettler, etch-a-sketch with Simon Kinnear, make freaky vegetables at Peepshow’s greengrocer’s stall, do a body painting with Thomas Matthews, and tuck into Turnbull Grey’s tuck shop.
Friday Late will see the V&A’s Pirelli Gardens full to bursting with London’s creative hipster crowd. Bring your family on Saturday afternoon to have your face painted and enter your kids in the Dress as a Design Icon fancy dress competition.
See you there…
Friday Late 28th July – 18:30-22:00
Saturday 29th July – 13:00-17:00
