This week saw the release of the new Vines music video Anysound. It is directed by Michel’s brother Olivier “Twist” Gondry and features some really amazing life like claymation.
The video is very impressive. The movements of the drummer are uncannily real, fluid and pretty spot on. Link

Jack White has always been a purist, from his minimal black, red, and white appearance within The White Stripes. This just launched website for ‘The ‘Raconteurs (White’s Solo Project) has as a similar stripped-down aesthetic: It’s designed in green and black with fonts like an old Apple IIE interface. Instead of pointing and clicking like regular websites, viewers can navigate the website with letter commands: “H” for Home, “T” for Tours, “B” for Bio. A definite visit for those who miss the days of the Commodore 64.

Not only is Kris Moyes the brother of Kim Moyes of the acclaimed Australian band The Presets, he also manned the helm of their newest video for “Are You The One?” A tour-de-force of postmodern recursions and pixelated meltdowns, this video boasts a breathtaking array of experiments in filmmaking and animation.
Take for instance the digi-beta compression that eats through scenes as a some kind of virus. While it has a vintage feel to it, such digital artifacting never existed in the 80s. This Is Kris Moyes’ second music video and he appears to be off to an amazing start, with what has to be one of the best videos if the year. Watch the video here.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think we all agreed that preloader bars have a bad reputation. Most of them are something we all love to hate…but once in a while you come across one that makes you smile. So far, my all-time favourite preloader lives on the site of a band who go by the name of The Semifinalists. A feisty trio who claim to be ‘as punk as shit’, I have a feeling this might be a band we hear more about in ‘06. But back to the preloader. He’s a hungry little fella who enthusiastically munches biscuit after biscuit while the site loads itself. It got me thinking…maybe someone should start the ‘Preloader Awards’? See him for yourself here.

Any re-interpretation of the London Underground map is usually “an event” for graphic designers but Dorian Lynskey’s History of 20th century music in The Guardian today is disappointing. Attempting to chart the branches and connections of 100 years of music onto the London Underground map was always going to fail but he’s had a go anyway. However much he admits it’s shortcomings, it’s redundant as a piece of information design - the information isn’t acurate or comprehensive enough to really learn anything from it. Here’s some other attempts both serious and silly.

Finnish Illustrator and Graphic Designer Mikko Rantanen has worked in the past with the Face magazine, Adrenalin and Orange. His work circles around all things vintage and collage. If you enjoyed the look and feel of The Smashing Pumpkins music video ‘Tonight Tonight’, then Mikko’s work is worth checking out as it is a progressive development on that style.
His recent 2006 venture has seem him team up with four Australian eager young beatniks, playing dirty, trashy and elegantly sexy alt-rock. The Howling Bells hail from the shores of Sydney, Australia now seeking residence in London. Not only illustrating and designing the up and coming single and album artwork, Mikko has also created a selection of illustrations on the website.

As well as working on a sequel for Christopher Nolan’s extremely dark-Batman Begins, Christian Bale is set to team up with Nolan on a film called ‘The Prestige’. Based on Christopher Priest’s 1996 novel the film is about 19th century rival magicians in turn-of-the-century London who battle each other for trade secrets. On top of that music icon David Bowie also stars in it. The combination of Bowie, Bale and Nolan makes this 2006 film one to look out for.
