Fibre
They don’t make photo booths like they used to, and that’s probably a good thing. No more waiting five minutes wondering whether the machine has forgotten that you exist, no more smelly chemicals and no more having to carry a soggy print around trying not get it stuck to everything. The booths have survived numerous technological advances simply because every so often we all need a passport sized photograph, and consequently the experience and the strip of prints have become cultural icons.
Enter Photobooth.net. Founders Brian and Tim are photo booth obsessive, hunting down every last photo booth in art, film, television, print and the world at large. There’s tons of great photo booth material here from Andy Warhol to the Hamlet Cigar commercial to the Elvis Costello video, even a Fibre photo booth. Clearly the most comprehensive photobooth resource on the internet. Smile!

Who has the most stylish Ice-cream vans? Where can you eat the most Rock ’n’ Roll breakfast? What’s the Yorkshireman’s Yorkshire Pudding? All these questions and 98 more are answered in The BMW 1 Series Good Food Ride – 101 Great British Food Adventures. Edited by Richard Benson (best-selling author of The Farm), designed by Fibre and beautifully illustrated by Stephane Kardos – and it’s free. 2,000 copies are available from www.1seriesgfr.co.uk. It’s our pleasure.

Thanks again to everyone who entered Fibre’s “Quick on the Draw” competition at the V&A Village Fete last week. The challenge was to draw a picture of Queen Victoria in one minute without lifting the pen from the paper. Nearly 400 people took part, which gave the judges a right royal headache. Nevertheless they managed to reduce that to a shortlist of 35 from which they picked the winner… Mr Bingo! (Yes, we know he’s a professional illustrator, but all the judges were blindfolded to make the process completely unbiased.)
By the way, the original image of Queen Victoria is shown above on the right and Mr Bingo’s is on the left – uncanny isn’t it?
Here’s the shortlist of 35 (plus any of the other 359 entries that we’ve scanned to date) and more work from our winner Mr Bingo.

Nathan, Vikesh and Dave are still reeling from the V&A Village Fete this weekend. No, they didn’t overdo it on the fizzy pop and fruitcake – the Fibre stall was overwhelmed by hoards of people trying to draw Queen Victoria in one minute without lifting their pen from the paper. We expected only about 50 drawings but we have 394 to judge!, we’re also planning to put them online when we’ve found the time to scan them all. In the meantime, here’s a set of photos from our stall and here’s some from our stall neighbours Peepshow, who made defamatory portraits of celebrities with vegetables. Thanks to everyone who took part.

You have one minute and you can’t take your pen off the paper!
Scarlet Projects have once again asked Fibre to exhibit in this years V&A Village Fete at the Victoria & Albert Museum, a contemporary twist on the traditional English fete. This year Fibre’s stall will consist of a drawing competition where punters will have two minutes to draw Queen Victoria. The best-of-show (the decision of our eminent panel of judges ((us)) is final) will receive a “creative hamper” brimming to the top with crayons, pencils, paints and pens to enable your creative juices to flow.
Amongst the other 30 stalls this year you will be able to play Ping Pong with People Will Always Need Plates, do a farm dance with Rob Ryan, eat fish and chips with Alexandre Bettler, etch-a-sketch with Simon Kinnear, make freaky vegetables at Peepshow’s greengrocer’s stall, do a body painting with Thomas Matthews, and tuck into Turnbull Grey’s tuck shop.
Friday Late will see the V&A’s Pirelli Gardens full to bursting with London’s creative hipster crowd. Bring your family on Saturday afternoon to have your face painted and enter your kids in the Dress as a Design Icon fancy dress competition.
See you there…
Friday Late 28th July – 18:30-22:00
Saturday 29th July – 13:00-17:00

We’ve rebooted the Fibre website with a redesign. It’s been a long time coming but as the saying goes “the designers children go without websites” The new site should look familiar to 30gms readers – we always envisioned fibredesign and 30gms as two halves of the same um… two-halved thing. They were both knitted with Expression Engine by Steve Sharpe of Gleam Studios with some extra bits by Jeremy Arnold. And for those of you who wonder why we couldn’t wait for the annual May 1st reboot of designer websites, we’re actually taking part in last years reboot – we’re just a little late…
