We love X-Bands (top) but wonder why Laufer are the only brand that makes them? – presumably they own the patent. It wouldn’t be so bad if they came in more colours. Step up one of our favourite stationers, MUJI. They have their own version of the X-Band (bottom) in chunky white, with holes that grip the corners. They are ideal for lo-fi collating of multiple books, although at $4 for 2 – they are actually high-price lo-fi. Spotted in MUJI at MOMA.

Whilst avoiding the snow during a summer holiday in Switzerland this year (yes it snowed in June) I came across this fantastic Freitag bag in a small town called Thun, it is made out of recycled truck tarpaulins, seat belts and inner tubes, cool already but the best bit about the bag is the packaging it came in, a box that turns into a TV! Check out Freitag here, they have also produced a limited edition range for the Tate London only available from the Tate shops in August, pitch up your tent early.

…..be a housemate. Nestle have planted 100 golden tickets into Kit Kat and Kit Kat Chunky bars across the UK, the lucky finders will then have the chance of being selected to go into the Big Brother house. Genius marketing, Big Brother is watching…. Kit Kat sales rocket.

Shadowplay have created some great animated titles for “Thank You for Smoking”. All the typography is in the vernacular of cigarette packaging and even low quality printing has been faithfully reproduced. All animated to the tune of Tex Williams’ Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette) – Tex a life-long smoker died of cancer in 1985.(via Tween)

All you inner Marthas—the Government Food Shoot Challenge is for you. The competition involves styling and shooting one of those drab, gray meals the US government provides to survivors of disasters and troops in the field. (Not so surprisingly the food packets seem to end up on eBay….).
Thus, in an attempt “to wring beauty out of tragedy, find rays of hope amid grim misfortune and,” as the organizers write, “simply prove that we can do things better than the Bush administration” they have set up the competition. It was kicked off recently with a photo shoot art directed and styled by several of Martha Stewart’s own (including Scot Schy, Will van Roden and Pam Morris). Now the organizers are sending out packets of food to those who enter before April 15 (or they run out of food) and the results will be made into a 2007 calendar with proceeds going to The People’s Hurricane Relief Fund and Oversight Commission. Just don’t eat the food.
