Last call for Brussels!

image

Don’t forget to send us your entries for the free tickets to Brussels competition!

In order to show you how simple it can be we thought we would have a go at reproducing our own Magritte here in the Fibre studio (no this wasn’t an entry for the National Giant Fruit Championships). For anyone who already sent in, or was planning to send in a version of this painting you will now have to think about a different solution. Full competition info here.

Blu Movies

image

Everyone by now must have seen Muto the epic eight minute stop frame animation from Italian artist Blu. Well, to my delight he’s just completed a new film as part of the Fame festival which kicked off in Grottaglie Italy on the 19th of September this year. It’s called Combo and this time it’s a collaboration with David Ellis who has been making similar animations as part of Barnstormers since 1999.

This is not a chance to win free tickets to Brussels

image

A couple of posts back I blogged about a free trip to Brussels Fibre was invited to go on by Eurostar and We Are Social. Well, courtesy of the same Little Break Big Difference campaign now you have the chance to win a pair of free tickets to the same destination.

All you have to do to be the winner of this generous offer is recreate a Magritte painting of your choice using photography. You may choose any one of his masterpieces and there are plenty to choose from. The best entry will receive the two tickets to Brussels.

Anyone wishing to enter can email their entry plus an image of the original piece you copied to the ‘contact’ link on the left of the page. The competition will only be open until the end of September, so get snapping!

Lawbreakers, Offenders and Wrongdoers

image

The V&A was awash with con’s by the end of this years Village Fete. And what a sorry looking bunch of miscreants you all were – Dance Floor Murderers, Fraudsters, Racketeers, Fashion Criminals and Nuclear Arms Dealers all rubbed shoulders with the other law-abiding visitors.

Criminality saw no boundaries as offenders young and old queued up to have their fictional Civil Liberties stripped. Some followed in the footsteps of other dynamic-duos and chose to be photographed with a partner-in-crime, others took the wrap for themselves and stood in the docks alone. Either way we caught some real hardened crims and did our part at ridding the streets of some of society’s most dangerous transgressors.

Our thanks goes to all those who took part and kept us busy for the entire event. And, if there are any of you felons reading this who received a Fibre Criminal Record, can you send us a scan of the picture side of your cards so that we can add it to our files.

War games

image

You’d think the fact that I’m too old, too short, a pacifist and oh yeah, English, may effect my chances of being an officer in the Swedish Armed Forces, but apparently not! According to the results from a series of exercises testing your multi-tasking skills, your spacial awareness, you concentration and memory, I may have what it takes! A great site, well put together, lovely graphics and great sound, plug in your headphones and see how you get on. Link

Weare is a fascinating collision of clothing and technology with a simple philosophy - everyone should be able to participate in fashion.

Moving Brands launched Weare with a socially networked and user created scarf. The Moving Brands ecosystem of friends, colleagues and clients were invited to submit images to a window gallery at the Moving Brands studio. This sequence of images was then used to create the Weare scarf. The limited edition, collectible scarf is available to buy online from Moving Brands or in selected design-led shops in London throughout December and January 2008.

Aspiring designers and contributors can create images for the next Weare product – to be produced early in 2008 – by visiting weare.movingbrands.com.

These images will be shown at the Weare exhibition (online and Moving Brands window display) from December 2007 to March 2008. As well as creating images, contributors will also be able to vote for what the next Weare product should be.

In the interest of full disclosure I am the lucky owner of scarf 203 of 1000 and I used to work at Moving Brands. Not that that should stop you checking them out.

Tis The Season to Think

image

Drinking and driving is a stupid thing to do. Not only could you ruin somebody else’s life, you could ruin your own too. The consequences are as follows; hefty fine, a criminal record and a year’s ban. People don’t think about this side of it very much. This Christmas, the Department for Transport and Leo Burnett wanted to change that, and called on the assistance of Weapon 7 for help.

The clever guys at Weapon 7 came up with an ad in rewind. The only piece of film the DfT will be running this Christmas. And the only place you will see it is online, probably between about 4 and 5 in the evening – just the sort of time you might be contemplating that cheeky Christmas pint. Rewind it here

Electric Light Orchestra

This is going to be the most fun since the Casio VL-Tone:

“Media artist Toshio Iwai and Yamaha have collaborated to design a new digital musical instrument for the 21st century, TENORI-ON. A 16x16 matrix of LED switches allows everyone to play music intuitively, creating a “visible music” interface.”

Yamaha are test-marketing it in the UK now, currently out of stock but hopefully not for long. Soon everyone will be able to electro-synth like Jean Michel Jarre! (via MIT Advertising Lab)

I’m digging this

image

A lot of stuff gets submitted to Digg every day, so good things can sometimes fly right past us. Digg Labs looks to use the data and create some pretty cool visualizations. I love Arc that displays stories, topics, and containers wrapped around a sphere. Arcs trail users as they digg stories across topics. Stories with more diggs make thicker arcs.

Check out the other cool visualizations that Digg Labs have to offer here.

cabspotting

image

image

Cabspotting traces San Francisco’s taxi cabs as they travel throughout the Bay Area. The patterns traced by each cab using its GPS to create a living and always-changing map of city life. The map hints at economic, social, and cultural trends that are otherwise invisible but ultimately something quite beautiful. The timelapse movies are also worth a look. (Thanks to Pani)
