War games

image

You’d think the fact that I’m too old, too short, a pacifist and oh yeah, English, may effect my chances of being an officer in the Swedish Armed Forces, but apparently not! According to the results from a series of exercises testing your multi-tasking skills, your spacial awareness, you concentration and memory, I may have what it takes! A great site, well put together, lovely graphics and great sound, plug in your headphones and see how you get on. Link

Cool warmth

Weare is a fascinating collision of clothing and technology with a simple philosophy - everyone should be able to participate in fashion.

Moving Brands launched Weare with a socially networked and user created scarf. The Moving Brands ecosystem of friends, colleagues and clients were invited to submit images to a window gallery at the Moving Brands studio. This sequence of images was then used to create the Weare scarf. The limited edition, collectible scarf is available to buy online from Moving Brands or in selected design-led shops in London throughout December and January 2008.

Aspiring designers and contributors can create images for the next Weare product – to be produced early in 2008 – by visiting weare.movingbrands.com.

These images will be shown at the Weare exhibition (online and Moving Brands window display) from December 2007 to March 2008. As well as creating images, contributors will also be able to vote for what the next Weare product should be.

In the interest of full disclosure I am the lucky owner of scarf 203 of 1000 and I used to work at Moving Brands. Not that that should stop you checking them out.

Tis The Season to Think

image

Drinking and driving is a stupid thing to do. Not only could you ruin somebody else’s life, you could ruin your own too. The consequences are as follows; hefty fine, a criminal record and a year’s ban. People don’t think about this side of it very much. This Christmas, the Department for Transport and Leo Burnett wanted to change that, and called on the assistance of Weapon 7 for help.

The clever guys at Weapon 7 came up with an ad in rewind. The only piece of film the DfT will be running this Christmas. And the only place you will see it is online, probably between about 4 and 5 in the evening – just the sort of time you might be contemplating that cheeky Christmas pint. Rewind it here

Electric Light Orchestra

This is going to be the most fun since the Casio VL-Tone:

“Media artist Toshio Iwai and Yamaha have collaborated to design a new digital musical instrument for the 21st century, TENORI-ON. A 16x16 matrix of LED switches allows everyone to play music intuitively, creating a “visible music” interface.”

Yamaha are test-marketing it in the UK now, currently out of stock but hopefully not for long. Soon everyone will be able to electro-synth like Jean Michel Jarre! (via MIT Advertising Lab)

I’m digging this

image

A lot of stuff gets submitted to Digg every day, so good things can sometimes fly right past us. Digg Labs looks to use the data and create some pretty cool visualizations. I love Arc that displays stories, topics, and containers wrapped around a sphere. Arcs trail users as they digg stories across topics. Stories with more diggs make thicker arcs.

Check out the other cool visualizations that Digg Labs have to offer here.

cabspotting

image

image

Cabspotting traces San Francisco’s taxi cabs as they travel throughout the Bay Area. The patterns traced by each cab using its GPS to create a living and always-changing map of city life. The map hints at economic, social, and cultural trends that are otherwise invisible but ultimately something quite beautiful. The timelapse movies are also worth a look. (Thanks to Pani)

Pretty Screensaver

image

The best screensavers are paradoxes - they give you something beautiful to look at when you aren’t around to see it. I like Pixel Breaker’s Polar Clock – great use of colour, well worth doing nothing for. Link

Festive Flash fun

image

Have a go at the very simple but very addictive Line Rider and then look at what can be achieved. What I want to know is does he support Arsenal or Manchester United? Happy holidays!

I like…

New York based photographer Brad Harris’s website, he takes a great pic and has a very original, clever and sexy nav! The site was designed by New York creative William Morrisey, I like him too!

Talk To The Hand

image

Learning any type of instrument can be like learning a new language. This simple, approachable interface designed by Recent RCA MA Interaction Designer Matthew Brown has made learning relatively complex musical theory a bit more fun.

With the use of a sock and some clever electronics the ‘Singing Sock Puppet’ works by opening and closing the mouth that bends a flex sensor and makes the puppet ‘sing’ up and down a particular scale. See video

The specific terminology used to describe the different ways these guys can sing - modes and scales, diatonic, chromatic, pentatonic, blues and so on - doesn’t usually enter the school music curriculum until around GCSE level (15-16 in the UK), so the idea of learning and creating intrigue through this cute medium is a great way for a younger audience to more easily digest dry music theory at an early age.
