Thanks to the Beard

If you fashion a beard and work in the creative industries then Mark Brereton would like to hear from you. Mark is working on “How to get ahead with a beard in the creative industries” – a book that will explore whether a beard adds more success within a creative role and career.
I’ve had a beard for ten years (that’s not my beard above btw) and I can confirm that a warm chin is definitely a more creative one.
Anyway, if you would like more info or you would like to help out by appearing in the book please contact Mark directly.

Is he saying that the beard is the CAUSE for success, as if people are more prone to appreciate your art if they see that you have a beard? Or just that the type of people who like having a beard are also the type of people who have the imagination to pursue creatve success?

There have been articles for years about women in the workplace - will they be more likely to succeed if they have long hair, short hair, wear suits, wear skirts, wear glasses. It is nice to see a take on the male asthetic marketing appeal.

Hi Tellie,

This project as been a personal interest of mine for some time now.
I decided to grow a goatee aged 18 and i have had it ever since. This book is more of a personal observation really. I have had many many great influences from educators and creatives with a beard, perhaps its always been a happy coincidence. A few years back i noticed that whilst looking through a creative circle awards publication that most of the top creatives and people who appeared in the publication had some sort of beard. I noticed a pattern emerging within my connection of the creative industries and the beard. I can’t really say, that if you have a beard you are or will be more successful but i just wanted to look at the subject of why so many creative types do decide to opt for the beard.
I have my own beard theory. But you will have to wait for the book for that one wink

All i am asking to start with is that if anyone is interested in helping with this project, beard or no-beard then please contact me and i can discuss my project in more detail.

I am initally looking for people who i can photograph in their working environment. These portraits will continue into a body of work in their own right and i am wanting to develop the portraits in a positive and beautiful portraiture print set.

Although the subject does touch on the humorous side for some people, please let me reassure you that i am in no way out to make people look (foolish or stupid). It would not be in my best interest do so and a pointless objective.

Many Thanks for those of you who have already shown an interest.

P.S. I know that this project is a very male dominated subject, just like the creative industries but i do plan on having a second book looking at this delicate subject “The female creative behind the designer beard”. Please forgive me for the working title but its work in motion.

Haha! Yes, I guess it would HAVE to be a male dominated subject - or I would HOPE so anyways. I don’t know many women who would enjoy being included in this book. It sounds very interesting, I will be interested in reading it when it comes out.

Where are you located, or are you willing to travel? An amazing calligrapher and artist here in Toronto has a beard, and he is quite an interesting man. Very versed in the classical arts and a big fan of old movies.  I do not know him well, but he has done some work for me.  If you are interested in contacting him you can leave me a message at my website (sixthandelm.com) and I will get his info for you. Best of Luck!
Tellie
