I’m not a plastic bag, honest!

image

Every person in this country uses on average 167 plastic bags a year, thats 10 billion in all, a whole lotta landfill and therefore a whole lotta nasty methane gas. This is why We Are What We Do approached top handbag designer Anya Hindmarch to create a re-usable shopping bag. Anya’s bags usually go for £500+ but this one will only set you back a fiver. The bags were launched last month at London fashion week and will be available to buy at Sainsburys from April. Looking at the picture above from their website, maybe bras are bad for the environment too!

Nice idea? Shame you can’t order one from anywhere as they’re all out of stock! & why is it so environmentally friendly anyway? Besides anything else, i’ve used more electricity than i usually would trying to bloody buy the thing online!!! Take your heads from your rears everyone!

Posted by Matt Lowe on Saturday, March 2007 at 12:32 PM

fantastic idea. but does this seem to just feed the consumerist culture of ours? I wonder how many of the people who are buying them will be getting them so as to curb their plastic bag consumption..??? Or is it just another bag to add to peoples collection...??

I do think its a great move in the right direction though. we are what we do really are a great company with innovative ideas.

I’ve tried and tried to get one - but alas sold out everywhere and the we are what we do website is so overloaded you can’t access it… ah well, back to the sainsburys re-usables…

If this was for charity it should have been sold in Sainsbury’s immediately. We are what we do have now created a demand for this bag, making it more desirable than ever.  I did want this item and registered to be one of first to know when I could buy online. Conveniently the site goes down and it is even more in demand, making the Hindmarch name household.  I do not want this item now because I believe all this was a publicity ploy!!

Posted by Helena on Wednesday, March 2007 at 12:05 PM

I agree with Helena. I really wanted one hoping I was helping the environment, but these bags are not even in the shops yet. On ebay they are going for about £100 and more… People are making alot of money from this product and for the wrong reasons.

Posted by Emma on Thursday, March 2007 at 1:45 PM

hmm i really wanted this bag!....so much so that i forgot that it was meant to be for the environment!

it does make you wonder where all the money made from this bag is going, i hope its not getting wasted like my electricity just to find it

I wanted to respond to the comments above by quoting some of David Robinson’s (Co-founder of We Are What We Do) words below:

Working with Anya Hindmarch on a bag which carries the message “I’m not a plastic bag” gave us the opportunity to develop, in Anya’s words, “a walking billboard” for the first action, carried by some of the most photographed people in the world and seen by millions. Making that bag available to the general public at a price that most could afford was important to us both. That’s why Sainsbury’s will be selling the bag later this month and why 5,000 were available through our website. We Are What We Do, however, is a small social enterprise. We don’t make profits and the amount we could risk on this venture had to be limited. An initial order of 30,000 stretched the limits of our resources and although our website sale has been oversubscribed 2 to 1, the scale of the demand does not yet exceed, or indeed approach, the volume that will be available through Sainsbury.

We are sorry that some people who hoped to purchase through the website have been disappointed and we apologise for this but we are reassured that the emails of complaint have been outnumbered 20 to 1 by the emails of support. We didn’t take money in advance and we have tried to communicate quickly and honestly. We are grateful that this approach has been so widely appreciated.

In the end, of course, this is not about one bag, Anya’s or otherwise. It is about all the rest – the millions of plastic carriers and vast quantities of unnecessary packaging wasting valuable resources and defacing the planet. This is the start of an ongoing campaign for We Are What We Do. We have taken the next logical step by recruiting as many retailers to our cause as possible. From the end of April we will be rolling out ‘Plastic Ain’t My Bag toolkits’ to a small army of high street shops, cafes and shopping centres to help and inspire shoppers to decline plastic bags gracefully and we will keep a running tally of retailer’s bag refusals with our on-line ‘action tracker’. For this issue specifically, our goal is to effect long-term, permanent behavioural change with the desired result that the disposable plastic bag becomes a thing of the past.

Overall however, drawing attention to any of the issues in our books, stimulating debate, and in particular, reaching those who’ve not thought about these things before is the biggest prize of all.

I finally pre-ordered one of these bags on the RonHerman.com website.. I live in Canada and I’m not worried about these bags becoming too common since they are not even out and will be released in limited editions only. I hope to be one of the few first to carry mine.. Look out for them in summer in Fred Sagal, Ron Herman, Anya Hindmarch boutiques as well as Holt Renfrew departement stores in Canada!!!!

I think this bag is a great idea with a bold eye-catching msg. Even though a lot of people feel some will just purchase it because it’s popular due to celebrities, the point is, people who wear the bag will still be aware of the message and ultimately, it’s a personal choice to reduce to stop using plastic bags.

Posted by Kat on Friday, May 2007 at 1:43 PM

Some say that the reputation of the designer will diminish if the bag becomes too popular, that can’t be; The world will see it as an expression of caring and conscience, and it will be beautiful that someday every one at the supermarket carries the same bag, our hearts will be filled with joy because finally we start to wake up our love for our mother earth that has given us all we have and are, and we’ll feel thankful to the designer because was the voice that motivated to be proactive.

As we know, a plastic bag can take up to 500 years to decay. According to credible source, worldwide we use over ONE MILLION plastic bags per minute. When looking at this horrific number, we can imagine what our landfills look like, but also consider the materials, energy and fuel that went into making the bags. As these bags sit slowly decaying at the landfill, they produce tons of methane gas which contributes to, next will be global warming. DISPOSABLE PLASTIC BAG is one of the main object in this issue. Actions to solve this critical problem are needed. And, disposable plastic need to be settled.

Market Needs:

There are differ types of plastic bag, for instant, grocery bags, shipping sacks and multi-wall bags, specialty bags and plastic liners and beater bags. Absolutely, everyone need plastic bag for different purposes in daily life. For instant, packaging, carrying, keeping stocks, etc. That’s why worldwide use over ONE MILLION plastic bags per minute.

Market Trend:

There are varies types of plastic bag in the market. The noticeable market trend indicates that bag had changed from time to time. From newspaper wrap proceed to paper bag and now plastic bag or combination, etc. They are the same, yet they are different. Thus, the quality and design of the bag is getting more creative and innovative due to the strong market needs, market competition and marketing war.

This is a good link for you to click in, it stated if company urged to changed focus on the market trend in plastic bag market, if not, they cant survive up to market standard and foresee to lose market share. (http://archive.gulfnews.com/articles/07/05/15/10125323.html)

Why we use supermarket plastic bag to pack our normal daily items but not a Calvin Klein plastic bag? Why people keep branded plastic or paper bag as collection? Yes, a bag is no more a bag. It is something that powerful to convey non-verbal messages. (Not to discuss reasons and why here, because it is out of topic) For example, when we see a big black plastic bag, we know that is a rubbish bag. When we see plastic bag with the word print of Tesco, we know that it is a Tesco plastic bag. When we walking on a complex, we see a lady holding Bonia plastic bag, we know she just bought something from Bonia. Nevertheless, when we see people carrying Prada bag, we know that he/she is Prada fan and lather lover. Yet, Prada bag portrays her image and status as someone from upper class of the society, stylish, trendy, well earning income, modern, etc. Why this happened? This is the power of non-verbal communication that Prada conveys.

All these happened in silent. We can deny, but evidently we have to admit in heart. Global market trend changed. A plastic bag no more a plastic bag!

Market Growth:

Worldwide use over ONE MILLION plastic bags per minute. We can image in mind.

Critical Issue

How to change the whole world permanent behavioral on disposable plastic bag become a thing of past and replace it with an environmental friendly bag to safe the world, whereby, strong market trend is resistant to change, yet it is leading to another opposite orientation.

Macro and Micro Environment:

Public have lack of serious concern about environmental issue. They may know, but tend to forgot. Or, they may understand well in theoretical but poor in practical. Medium like family, school, media, etc, play an important role here. But, we understand that it is such a boring topic to be taught and discuss. (2) Thoughts of public regard social norms and trend of plastic bag & bag

(3) Lifestyle

(4) Need, want, and expectation of public toward the features and benefits for a bag

Mission: Safe the Environment

Goal:

To change the permanent behavioral on disposable plastic bag become a thing of past and replace it with an environmental friendly bag (environmental friendly bag I mean here not necessary I Am Not a Plastic Bag)

Objectives:

(1) To create awareness on environmental issue

(2) To build the identity of an environmental friendly shopping bag

(3) To lead the public get into act to cooperate willingly in environmental activities to safe the world

(4) To create a change of habit among the public to use environmental friendly shopping bag rather than a disposable plastic bag

(5) To increase the usage of environmental friendly bag

(6) To decrease the usage of disposable plastic bag

Target Market:

(1) Female Market

(2) Supporter for environmental safe activities

(3) People from all over the world

Strategy Pyramid :

Start a base of Zero to create public awareness about environmental issue by building up the identity of an n environmental friendly shopping bag and inspired a high demand for the environmental friendly shopping bag, lead the public get into act to cooperate willingly in environmental activities to safe the world. Sooner and sooner, create a change of habit among the public to use environmental friendly shopping bag, and finally, increase the usage of environmental friendly shopping shop, and decrease the usage of the disposable plastic bag that will cause bad impact to the environment.

Tactic A: Approach top handbag designer Anya Hindmarch to design and create a re-usable plus environmental friendly shopping shop.

Reason: Anya Hindmarch’s design is always welcome by the public. Good organization status and background, well-established brand name, good quality of the product, great spokesperson for a re-useable shopping bag at the beginning of the campaign.

Tactic B: The motto “I Am Not a Plastic Bag”

Reason: It is simplicity enough to understand, easy to remember, and stylish enough to convey the message and hard to forget! Cool slogan!

Tactic C: I am Not a Plastic Bag carry by the most photographed people in the world to catch by millions.

Reason: Eyes catching of Anya bag on the hand of celebrities increase popularity of a re-usable plus environmental friendly bag, create a curiosity towards what is actually about the bag, while the whole world media in highlight at the word of IM NOT A PLASTIC BAG, discussion evoke at every corner of the world, TV news, radio news, entertainment news, newspaper, magazines, Internet articles, etc, make the whole world is talking about “Anya Hindmarch”, “celebrities’ support in environmental activities”, “re-usable bag”, “environmental friendly bag”, “safe the environment, safe the world”, “problems create by plastic towards our environment”, “prevent from global warming”, etc, and it actually create a very big impact on public awareness towards the topic of environmental issues. This situation encourages public to follow the celebrities’ steps to involve in environment activities effectively.

Tactic D: Making the bag available to the general public at the price that most could afford.

Reason: Good concept with unaffordable price, encourage mentally and spiritually support from the public. Affordable price get public to support in action effectively.

Tactic E: Well control of the available stock to the public.

Reason: To make it great enough to make appearance in the public eyes, limited enough to supply for certain amount of customer, happening enough to appear in all media, hot enough to be discussed, high enough to be rated as a most demand product, etc. This kind of situation inspired a strong drive and desire from the customer to get one. Listen to surrounding to talk about it, watching people having it, but cant it. Brilliant!

Tactic F: Make it availability and appearance at convenience place like “Saint burry” soon without price increase although there is a high demand.

Reason: Saint burry is a hypermarket like Tesco in UK. It is a marvelous idea to make it not available in the market for a short period of time, then come back again. It ensures a higher feedback from public after waiting thistly for it. No price increase should be applause yet it is understood, because it is not a commercial item like other bag. Being not available in the market meant to inspire demand and encourage more participation but not for the bottom line to produce better profit. Great!

Posted by Nico on Thursday, July 2007 at 2:54 AM

Strategies Mix (4P) Product, Place, Promotion, Price

Good branded concept bag with high quality, carry a meaningful work, affordable price, easily get it in hypermarket soon, then can join the majority in participating in environment campaign, yet safe the world.

Sales Forecast Vs Actual Sales

Great as what we can’t deny!

Controls

Stock:

Well control of the available stock to make it great enough to make appearance in the public eyes, limited enough to supply for certain amount of customer, happening enough to appear in all media, hot enough to be discussed, high enough to be rated as a most demand product, etc. This kind of situation inspired a strong drive and desire from the customer to get one. After that, make it available again at the easy reaching place without price increase. Good control, they know when to release and when to hold back to lead the progress to the good desirable result.

Publics:

Create public attention via the media by most photographed people in the world with a bag brand Anya Hindmarch, evoke curiosity among public towards the bag, transmitting the important of environmental issue unconsciously, and get the high desire of the public get into act to involve in the campaign willingly. I believed, with the availability of the re-usable shopping bag, and, I believed not only Anya Hindmarch bag, the other brand or non-branded re-usable shopping with plenty of designs will be available in the market. Unconsciously, people will get used to the habit of using a re-usable shopping bag rather than a disposable plastic bag. Disposable plastic will be sooner and sooner become a past like cassette and manual typewriter. It may not happened 100%, but it takes time and gradually approaching to a better figure. Well control of human psychology, beliefs, attitude, and behavior in every differ stage which well planned by WE ARE WHAT WE DO!

Implementation Milestone of Evaluation

Great!

Hope that continuation and follow up of such a successful campaign will make it has a long-term effect. Never forget the mission, is to change the permanent behavioral on disposable plastic bag become a thing of past and replace it with an environmental friendly bag to safe the world!

Hurray!!

In a nut shell, I would like to say that this is a good campaign. Nothing is perfect in this world. Definitely, there are pro and cons, positive and negative affect, advantages and disadvantages, etc. In order to accomplish a Big Goal to safe the world, small negative effect is unavoidable. If the negative effect isn’t a bad virus to spread and harm anyone, for me, it is still the right way to continue in order to accomplish the big dream that will benefit everyone in the world and even the next generation. Never ever block by small obstacle and give up the big dream for nation! With an optimist mind, things will get to the positive way!

I am sorry if this is a poor presentation of my own view.i just utter my mind as a normal citizen.

Regard,
Nico

What a bunch of morons.....I have been using canvas bags for years that youy can buy almost anywhere for few bucks.

Posted by nlebourgeois on Thursday, July 2007 at 2:52 AM

Here’s some SUPER cute ones if you wanna make a statement to others...I still seem to be the only one at Ralphs (in LA) using them.  I’ve only seen one other person total who brings their own - and I go to the grocery store at least once a week!  I also take them with me to the mall - or anywhere and am proud to say NO BAG!  I BROUGHT MY OWN.  usually, my purchase is already in a plastic/paper bag and I have to remove it and give it back to them!  They’re a little more $$ but proceeds go to charities and environmental groups.

Posted by M. on Monday, July 2007 at 8:36 PM

It doesn’t really matter where it’s made, or what it’s made out of… The point is, people who like this bag will want to use it and that in itself can reduce the consumption of plastic bags.
The goal wasn’t to diminish child labor or cheap labor in China.

If people like this bag and decide to use it as an alternative to plastic shopping bags, then the message and goal is effective.

People who want this bag know its intended purpose and ultimately it’s a personal choice to stop using plastic or not. The bag itself doesn’t make a difference, it’s the attitude people adopt.

The message is boldly imprinted on the bag so it’s promoting awareness and a 2nd look at things.
Like if you bring it to a supermarket where everyone is packing their stuff in plastic, they might think twice next time.

----BTW, don’t be fooled by the price drop of these bags on ebay, there are tons of fakes out there, over half of them are sold from China now. Beware of the lack of pictures, new sellers with little or no feedback!!!
